Dr. Skip Downing’s definition of a Victim, is someone’s personal lack of self responsibility to want to better their life, by taking the initiative to ask the questions and coming up with viable solutions for the things that happen outside of their control. The label Victim and victim have different connotations, Victims make their lives into an outside forces fault, while a victim is the unfortunate recipient of a bit of bad luck. While his definition of a Creator is the opposite of the Victim, It also incorporates the idea that, as a Creator, you shape your life into what you see as a fit standard of living for you, and those around too, with the decisions that being a victim caused you to make.

Playing a Victim

Life has an odd way of always throwing a curve ball at me; every time I get ahead something always comes to send a bit rough business. Playing a Victim is not usually how I operate, I feel that it’s a duty to oneself to take responsibility for your mistakes and to own up to them; however, there was an incident not too long ago, where I was mixing the mortar at work for my boss, I try really hard not to make mistakes on the sand count, because it’s pretty easy to mess up, and you can tell immediately usually. I was a little out of it that day and completely forgot to put the bag of mortar in after the sand, usually it’s put in half way through the sand. I poured it in the wheel barrow and saw what I did quickly. Instead of owning up to it and fixing it by hand mixing it, something I really didn’t want to do, I went to push it, pretended to slip, and dumped the whole thing into the sand pile. I apologized to my boss, and he understood that it “happens” sometimes. I cleaned up the mess and poured it into empty block cells for the evidence to just disappear.

The first thing that should be done after making a mistake, after realizing what has been done, is to fix the error. Owning up to a mistake is a respectable start to the correction process. There is nothing wrong with making a mistake, it’s how we learn. I did several things wrong that day, for one there was no admitting to anyone what had happened, there is also no attempt to correct the mistake, I played the role of a victim of circumstances. A Creator mindset towards the situation would have lead me to hand mix the mortar directly in with a hoe. The only thing hurt, outside of my conscious, was a little loss in materials and time. If the situation come’s about again, I can’t say I would make a different choice, in that case it would have taken more time and effort to fix it, than to hide it. There is one Creator mindset lesson that I pulled from the situation, I have not made the same mistake since, from my failure I learned to pay attention to details a little more.

Life is an unfortunately short process. Being the best that you can be requires understanding yourself on every level possible. Your mind is your greatest creative tool. With it you create visions of what you want to see. I want to train my mind to be the most efficient machine it can be. Wasting time is a big thing to me, I am always thinking about “ Damn, I wasted 10 seconds!” which adds up to minutes, hours, days, and years on things that have brought me nothing but frustration. If I can eliminate these errors, by having already created mental procedures, then I will feel as if more of my life held meaning, other than taking up space by being a productive member of society.
